The 1900 Census for Crete, Nebraska

Locating the Smejkal family in the 1900 Census is difficult.  It was finally located by searching for other families that were known to be neighbors.  The difficulty is in the fact that the census taker was unable to spell the name, as he probably was not fluent in the Czech language, and the John and Anna probably spoke little English.  Therefore the census taker used a German spelling which appears on the form approximately as "Schmaekel".  The names and ages appearing on the census form confirm that it was the John & Anna Smejkal family and provide considerable information.  See 1900 Census Form.  The file as it opens is difficult to read, but it is in  pdf. format and by either clicking on the "-" or "+" signs in the top taskbar or right clicking on the document and clicking on the "Marquee Zoom" in the drop down box, the document can be enlarged as much as necessary to make it readable.
